What to expect at your first family counseling session

The first session of family therapy will include filling out necessary paperwork, getting a family history and understanding what concerns brought your family to counseling.  In this session the therapist will get to know members and focus on understanding the dynamic of your family. Parents will be given Developmental History Forms to fill out for each child to bring to the next session.  Parents will each be given a Family Couples Intake Form to fill out and bring to the next session.

What happens at family therapy?

Family therapy can consist of your whole family or parts of your family.  Depending on what the therapist feels in appropriate considering the issues that your family is facing. The therapist will help your family to uncover strengths, individually and as a family.  Activities, role plays, expressive art and games may be utilized to increase positive interactions between members, facilitate conversation and help target areas of concern.

Most family issues arise from miscommunication. Psycho-education about healthy communication will be provided. Opportunities to practice healthy communication will occur in session. A safe place for all family members will be created and maintained to allow all family member to express their thoughts and feelings.


It is important to remember that therapy is not a "quick fix." It takes work and time to see improvement. The families that will see the most benefit from therapy are those that are committed to keeping weekly appointments and completing any homework assignments that they are given.
