Child Therapy for Scotts Valley

PSad, lonely child sitting on grassWhat can I expect when my child has therapy?
-First Session
The first session is the intake session.  It is best to come in alone to discuss your concerns about your child with the therapist. At this meeting paperwork will be filled out, policies discussed and consents signed.  You will be given a Developmental History Form to fill out and  bring to the following session. You may print one out here and bring it to the first session.  The Developmental History Form will allow an overview of your child's development and family history.  Release Forms will be signed if needed for the therapist to collect information from your child's pediatrician or teacher.

For what to tell a child about their first counseling session click here.

-Second Session
The therapist uses this time to get to know your child.  Just as they did an intake with you they will do an intake with your child.  The therapist will find out what interests your child has and what the child's concerns are. Art, toys, books and games will be used to engage your child in the process of therapy and used to help assess your child.  The therapist utilizes play therapy with most children as play is a child's natural language. Learn more about play therapy here.

It is important to remember that therapy is not a "quick fix." It takes work and time to see improvement. The families that will see the most benefit from therapy are those that are committed to keeping weekly appointments and completing any homework assignments that they are given.

If you would like to check -in in regard to your child's therapy you are welcome to contact the therapist by phone.  However, due to time restraints if you are in need of longer than 15 minutes please schedule a phone appointment or an in-person session.
