Why Therapists teach Self-Care to Families and Individuals

Self-care is important for families and individuals.  Self-care can be the first line of defense for families and individuals that are struggling.  Many studies have been done on self-care and it's benefits.  It has been proven to help clients deal with chronic illness, increase mental well-being, lower anxiety, increase positive interactions between family members, lower stress, bring balance to our lives, improve brain function and memory.  When family members are taught in counseling to engage in self-care it enhances the outcome of therapy.

Self-care has different facets. It is important that self-care  occurs in all areas of our life: emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and social.  What is that you enjoy? What excites you? What relaxes you? What brings you peace and contentment?  Remember that we are all unique individuals. What we find a self-care activity, others may find to be stressful or anxiety inducing.  That's okay! We are all different.  Embrace the truth of who you are and begin to take care of you.

Try to engage in self-care daily. It does not have to be something big. It can be as small as a cup of coffee, lighting a candle or taking a five minute walk.  You are worth caring for! As you take this step toward caring for yourself you will find that and your family will reap the benefits.
